QotD: “It’s like fucking BDSM hipsterism”

You know what’s been surprising me lately? Listening to people call 50 shades, abusive and awful, and then in the same breath, say “why pay to watch? I can find porn for free online!” Like??? It’s not okay for actors to stimulate this onscreen but if it’s on their computer.., it’s okay?

Hating on 50 Shades is very trendy among pro-porn/pro-BDSM people right now because it creates an easily digestible boogeyman to turn all criticism towards via No True Scotsman (“this isn’t REAL BDSM, this is abuse!” “What’s the difference between BDSM and abuse?” “Consent!” “She consents. They have a contract.” “BUT IT’S DIFFERENT” “Why?” “IT JUST IS” etc.) You can also see it in the “watch Secretary instead!” “read this BDSM series instead!” bullshit.

I think it also has the added bonus of being a book/film series largely targeted toward women, particularly middle-aged women, and is thus even more ripe for mocking, as that group gets mocked anyway. It’s like fucking BDSM hipsterism. Basically a bunch of pissbabies simultaneously uncomfortable with the mirror the book/movie holds up to the abuse inherent in their culture AND frustrated that those boring ol’ vanilla people are trying to elbow in on their totes subversive fun.
