‘Deep Throat’ Choir leaflet for WOW 2015

EDIT 02/Apr/15: “Apologies for the mistake in this leaflet as to the cause of Linda Marchiano’s death. We knew her, but misremembered this. The fact stands that Linda was harmed in the making of the film and suffered extreme poor physical and mental health subsequently. And the fact stands that the filming of her abuse should not be reproduced as a cultural motif.”

Several women successfully leafletted the ‘Deep Throat’ Choir gig at Women of the World on the South Bank, London on Saturday 7th March. We pointed out the harmfulness of the choir’s name, pointed out some facts about the film it inspired, and urged the choir to change their name.

Several women in the audience agreed and many choir members engaged with the leafletters, acknowledging that the choir’s name had been controversial.

Deep Throat?

The star of that movie, Linda Marchiano, died from being deep throated. After years of coercion from her manager, Chuck Traynor, on-set violence during the making of Deep Throat, and post traumatic stress disorder, Linda committed suicide, five years after the release of Deep Throat.

For those of us who knew her, the flippant use of her abuse as a cultural trope is not a joke. Deep Throat was and is sexualized hatred against women.

Forty years on from the release of Deep Throat men have us where they want us; unable to have sex without consuming our own degradation and unable to imagine authentic female sexuality.

If you are a woman who is angry at the pornification of society and the deep-throatification of feminism, Antiporn London meets regularly for consciousness raising and protests against the industry. Join us.

  1. Linda Lovelace died in a car crash in 2002, not from suicide.

    FTFY.

  2. Wow. Very dishonest of you. She died due to injuries sustained in a car accident in 2002. You should never try to make your point using dishonest tactics such as lying.

  3. Ok, I didn’t actually have any involvement in the writing of this leaflet, and it was written in a rush to be printed in time for the festival. I did think the year was wrong, but thought changing the leaflet from what was handed out would be dishonest.

Linda Lovelace was seriously harmed by her involuntary involvement in the porn industry, this is indisputable, unless you are going to call a sex industry survivor a liar.

As for the suicide claim, I will look into that.

  4. I have spoken to the woman who wrote the leaflet, this was an honest mistake on her part, and she is writing a brief statement in response.

I was also in error; because the leaflet was written by someone I know and trust, I was not as rigorous in my fact-checking as I would have been if I was re-blogging something I found on the internet.
